Portland Theatre and Dance

The Lewis & Clark College Theatre Department maintains a close relationship with the theatre world beyond campus. This ongoing relationship allows us to bring professional artists from the city to campus, as well as provide a variety of offerings to our students.

There are a number of larger and smaller theatre and dance companies in the Portland Metropolitan Area. In fact, our students regularly attend theatre productions in town, and the faculty is closely involved with the theatre life in Portland as members of board of directors, directors, dramaturges, and designers for professional productions in town, and as active members of the theatre and dance community as such. Furthermore, many of the current and former theatre department students are invited to collaborate with the faculty on their off-campus professional work, and number of our graduates became respected theatre and dance artists in and around Portland.

In addition, the ongoing relationship between the larger theatre and dance community and the Theatre Department allows us to bring professional artists from the city to campus. Actors, directors, designers, and dancers and choreographers often teach ad hoc classes, meet with students in discussion about particular performances, offer workshops, and bring their work to the Department.

We believe that the active engagement with the larger Portland community is an essential part of the theatre education here, and the broad array of cultural events in Portland makes such engagement relatively easy. Within a short twenty-minute bus trip to downtown Portland, the students find a large number of theatre and dance companies that offer a vast array of theatre and dance forms.
