Hispanic Studies Professor’s journal celebrates tenth year

Hispanic Studies Professor Juan Carlos Toledano Redondo’s journal, Alambique, will celebrate a decade of publication with a fourth monograph in February 2024.

In an alambique (n. still), ancient alchemists sought to turn base metals into gold. University of South Florida Tampa Library offers this journal as a distiller of (im)possible dreams of science fiction and fantasy.

Alambique: Academic Journal of Science Fiction and Fantasy is a double blind peer-reviewed, open-access journal devoted to scholarly research and criticism in the fields of science fiction and fantasy originally composed in Spanish or Portuguese. Alambique publishes scholarly articles written in English, as long as the main focus of the study concentrates on one of the Spanish or Portuguese cultural regions of the world. It also accepts scholarly articles written in Spanish, Portuguese and English that focus on relevant cultural contact areas, i.e. Catalan, Guarani, Nahuatl, etc. Alambique also intends to publish old and/or largely forgotten literary works that helped forge the Spanish and Portuguese tradition in science fiction and fantasy. These texts, whenever possible, have accompanying English translation.

Hispanic Studies Professor Juan Carlos Toledano Redondo founded and co-edits Alambique. In honor of Alambique’s tenth anniversary, a fourth monograph will be published in February 2024. Professor Toledano Redondo teaches courses on the fantastic, nation-building, cultural studies, and feminism in contemporary Latin America and Spain.

Outstanding Achievement at the 2025 Chinese Bridge Competition!

At the 2025 “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency & Talent Competition – Oregon Preliminary our very own Trevor Koo won 1st place, and Marta Alpresa Balaguer, took the 2nd place awards. This is an incredible accomplishments that reflect their dedication, hard work, and talent in learning Chinese. Our Chinese instructor, Meiru Liu said, “I’m so proud of how far you’ve come and the passion you both bring to studying the language and engaging with Chinese culture. Keep up the great work—this is a wonderful milestone on your Chinese learning journey, and I look forward to seeing what you’ll accomplish next!”

SPAN 260: Cultural Production of the Spanish-Speaking World: Introduction to Latin American Studies

What is Latin America, a region, a culture, an idea, a utopia? Are we part of Latin America if the US is the fourth country with the most Latin people in the world? This introductory course will address these and many more questions through analyzing history, literature, music, cinema, and other cultural aspects.
