What three words would you use to describe L&C?

Independent thinkers, intimate class size, bucolic campus

What made you want to come to Lewis & Clark?

The excellent political science program.

What have you been doing since graduation?

Most notably, I became the second director of College Outdoors in 1980. The program was still in its fledgling stage. I began new initiatives that included Spring Break adventures, New Student Trips, and the beginnings of the equipment program. I left in 1984 to attend graduate school at Yale. After grad school, I began a long career in public finance, working with municipalities and school districts throughout the Pacific Northwest to finance new public infrastructure.

How did Lewis & Clark prepare you for your career?

L&C offered the classic advantages of a liberal arts education. I gained the ability to adapt to rapidly changing work and cultural dynamics.

What would you say is the most important thing you learned at Lewis & Clark?

How to think and write more critically.

What’s your favorite part or most memorable experience of serving on the Board of Alumni?

Under the leadership of Michael Ford, we began the very first national Board of Alumni. I also served as an ex officio member of the college’s Board of Trustees, giving a better insight into the broader workings of the college.

How do you stay connected to Lewis & Clark as an alum?

Mostly through continuing friendships with fellow alums, and through annual financial giving.

Have you been to Alumni Weekend or other programming, like Homecoming, etc.? What did you enjoy about the event(s)?

I mostly attended reunions of my Yugoslavia overseas program. These have been wonderful reconnections with truly lovely people. It’s very fun to see how life has played out for all of us.

How do you encourage other alumni to give back to the college?

I believe in the old volunteer saying that everyone has something to give: “time, talent, or treasure.” Find what fits your personal circumstances the best. You’ll make a difference.
