Stephanie Arnold joined the Lewis & Clark College Theatre Department in 1986 after teaching at Mills College and the University of California, Riverside. At Lewis & Clark, she taught acting, directing, dramatic literature, and the senior seminar. She directed many mainstage productions in Fir Acres Theatre, among them The Three Sisters, Top Girls, Roosters, Execution of Justice, Into the Woods, Mad Forest, Anna in the Tropics and Vilna’s Got a Golem. Special collaborative projects drawing together students with members of the larger community and professional practitioners included the opera, The King of Bali, 12-1-A produced for the Smithsonian Conference, The Road to Redress and Beyond: The Japanese-American Experience, 1941-98, and Jabulile! performed at the Grahamstown South Africa National Arts Festival. Professor Arnold chaired the Theatre Department for 12 years and led off campus programs to New York City and New Zealand and Australia. In all areas of her teaching and scholarship, she has been concerned with the relationship between theatre and social change. She received the College’s teacher of the year award and the faculty diversity award. Stephanie Arnold retired from the College in 2012.
Publications include her college textbook, The Creative Spirit: An Introduction to Theatre (6 editions), as well as articles for the Theatre Journal, the Drama Review, and the anthology, Making a Spectacle. In 2016 she served on the Jury for the Pulitzer Prize in Drama.
In retirement she divides her time between hiking and backpacking and tackling the challenges of writing fiction.
