Lewis & Clark Latinx/Hispanic Alumni Association

Mission

The Lewis & Clark Latinx/Hispanic Alumni Association (LCLHAA) creates a community for mentorship, networking, and support for current and future Latinx/Hispanic alumni of Lewis & Clark College. Through its events and initiatives, the LCLHAA serves as a resource to facilitate the creation of a foundation for its members to provide each other with career and leadership opportunities, aid with professional development, and a space to strengthen and support the Lewis & Clark Latinx/Hispanic community.

We aim to create a strong and engaged network that embodies Lewis & Clark’s cornerstones of excellence, equity, community, and service. As a collective, we aspire to:

  • Collaborate with the LC Board of Alumni, the Latinx Student Union (LSU), Gente Latina Unida, and other student organizations to support the academic, professional, and personal success of Latinx and Hispanic students at Lewis & Clark.
  • Support the success of Latinx and Hispanic alumni in their careers, entrepreneurial ventures, and community leadership.
  • Encourage engagement of Latinx and Hispanic alumni within the broader Lewis & Clark community.
  • Advocate for representation by supporting Lewis & Clark in strengthening its commitment to Latinx and Hispanic students, faculty, and staff.
  • Serve as a resource for current students and alumni, in collaboration with our allies, by facilitating mentorship, networking, and professional development opportunities.
  • LCLHAA creates a vibrant community that celebrates Latinx culture, fosters meaningful connections and embraces cultural heritage through language, traditions, and shared experiences.

We invite all Latinx and Hispanic alumni and students of Lewis & Clark to join our community and contribute to a culture of excellence, empowerment, and connection.

Meet the Founding Members

Alexa Cid Carrera ’21

I am a bilingual and bicultural marketing professional with a passion for using storytelling and strategy to promote equity, inclusivity, and meaningful community engagement. With over four years of experience managing social impact projects, I specialize in creating culturally relevant campaigns that amplify the voices of historically underserved communities.

As the co-founder of La Casa de Mamá, a vegan Mexican panadería, I’ve led our team in transforming traditional recipes into innovative offerings while connecting deeply with our community through authentic and engaging marketing strategies. My entrepreneurial mindset, combined with my expertise in project management and community outreach, enables me to turn creative visions into actionable results.

Alan Misael Gaxiola ’21

I was born in Phoenix, AZ to a large Mexican family that loved spending time back home. I was able to grow up between Arizona, Sinaloa, and Virginia, having gone to school in all three states in two different languages. I graduated from Lewis & Clark College in 2021, having learned much more than I could have imagined. I worked in the departments of Annual Giving, Admissions, and New Student Orientation while a student. I participated in many unique experiences around the globe in an effort to learn more about the social inequities faced worldwide.

Directly following my graduation, I started working in client finance and financial planning roles for some of the world’s largest marketing agencies. In the spring of 2025, I began working at Arizona State University in the Office of Planning and Budget as a Senior Budget Planning and Operations Analyst.

About the Artist

The Lewis & Clark Latinx/Hispanic Alumni Association would like to thank Velia Mayté Jacobo for creating the image for the LCLHAA. Velia was born in rural Sinaloa, Mexico to a farming family. After completing her studies at the Universidad de Occidente in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, she moved to Phoenix, AZ. She went on to have a family of her own all while owning and operating three distinct businesses. Velia worked incredibly hard so her children always had more than they needed. She instilled the values of her culture and roots in them, making sure they never forgot where they truly come from, and how to love being Mexican in this country. Wanting something different for herself and family, in 2009 she decided to make the move to Colonial Beach, VA. It was in this small town of 3,000 people that she found her passion for painting. Velia found herself and true happiness while holding the paintbrush. She has created pieces in a variety of mediums, all telling different stories about her life, the people she loves, and what it means to be alive. She now lives in Phoenix, AZ once more, focusing her time on teaching her grandkids the joys of self expression through art.
