- Registration, welcome lunch, and introductions
- Campus tour with a focus on sustainability initiatives
- Introduction to data science tools and environmental datasets
- Workshop on data cleaning, wrangling, and exploring environmental datasets
- Field Trip to a site where data collection occurs
- Guest speaker on data gathering
- How to read graphs: workshops on “storyboarding” and “story mapping” from data
- Team Time – students brainstorm and develop their project topics and datasets
- Guest speaker on data visualization in journalism
- Mentor feedback session: one-on-one guidance for refining analysis and visualizations.
- Guest speaker on sharing data-driven narratives
- Field trip to OMSI
- Team and individual project work: finalizing visualizations and story components.
- Rehearsals and peer feedback
- Social activity: visit Powell’s Books and Food Trucks
- Final project presentations: students share their interactive data journalism stories with peers and faculty
- Closing remarks, reflections on data as a tool for advocacy, and award recognition for standout projects
