• Campus tour with a focus on sustainability initiatives
• Introduction to data science tools and environmental datasets

Day 2: Getting the Data

• Workshop on data cleaning, wrangling, and exploring environmental datasets
• Field Trip to a site where data collection occurs
• Guest speaker on data gathering

Day 3: Visualization and Storytelling

• How to read graphs: workshops on “storyboarding” and “story mapping” from data
• Team Time – students brainstorm and develop their project topics and datasets
• Guest speaker on data visualization in journalism

Day 4: Getting Heard

• Mentor feedback session: one-on-one guidance for refining analysis and visualizations.
• Guest speaker on sharing data-driven narratives
• Field trip to OMSI

Day 5: Finalizing Projects

• Team and individual project work: finalizing visualizations and story components.
• Rehearsals and peer feedback
• Social activity: visit Powell’s Books and Food Trucks

Day 6: Presentation Day

• Final project presentations: students share their interactive data journalism stories with peers and faculty
• Closing remarks, reflections on data as a tool for advocacy, and award recognition for standout projects
• Farewell dinner and group celebration
