What Is Fir Acres Writing Workshop?

Fir Acres Writing Workshop is a premier residential summer creative writing program, held from June 21–July 4, 2026, for rising 10th, 11th, and 12th grade high school students. Sixty students from across the country come together for two weeks to write and join a community of writers on the beautiful, wooded campus of Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon.

In daily workshops, participants study great writing and produce their own under the guidance of dynamic, thoughtful, published faculty. At night, participants gather to socialize, meet and hear from distinguished visiting writers, and work on their own poetry, fiction, and creative prose.

Our mission is to provide a high-caliber, pre-collegiate, creative educational experience to bright, inventive, and passionate high school students. Our program appeals to young writers and artistic students who are drawn to the beauty of the Pacific Northwest and the fun, hip mystique of Portland.

  • I never knew how to really begin to write a creative essay. The strategies we used will become very beneficial to me in my future school and out-of-school work.

  • Between the people, the campus, and the lessons, I came into my junior year of high school a deeper and more grounded person, and of course, a better writer.

  • My writing has changed and improved after being exposed to other types of writing. I am thinking deeper, and I know my friends will see a change when I get back home. I have discovered how to learn more, how to gain more from my experiences.

  • I have learned that my heart is deeper and fuller and richer than I thought it to be.

  • Thank you for the best summer of my life (I’m truly not exaggerating)...

  • Writing every day has been productive and a good experience for me. Now that I’ve begun to do this, I won’t stop.
