The purpose of the Lewis & Clark Economics Internship Fund is to underwrite or supplement expenses of students at Lewis & Clark College who are engaged in internships related to economics.
Current undergraduate student in good academic standing with the College
Applied to 1+ unpaid/low stipend internship for a minimum of 8 weeks related to economics (Internship must be secured by May 1)
If you have questions regarding the relevancy of your internship to economics, you are encouraged to meet with Nina Olken in the Career Center.
Preference will be given to the following:
Internships located in: (1) Portland, (2) Pacific Northwest, (3) United States
Full-time internships
Rising juniors and seniors
Students who demonstrate a financial need in order to pursue the internship
One grant is traditionally awarded each year in a set amount of approximately $4000. However, the committee reserves the right to divide the funds between multiple students at their discretion. Recipients will receive the award in the form of a stipend. A stipend is a fixed amount and is not an hourly wage. (Please keep in mind awards may take up to 3 weeks to process and may not be mailed out until late May.)
The online application offers the opportunity to include an optional budget worksheet. This worksheet can be used to enhance the argument for funding by identifying specific anticipated expenses for the committee but is not a required part of the application.
Recipients will be asked to agree to following terms and conditions prior to the issuance of award funds. Failure to complete these requirements will result in the forfeiture of award funds.
Attend orientation workshop and/or 1:1 meeting with Nina Olken
Complete Learning Agreement
Complete Site Supervisor Agreement
Complete intern evaluation and facilitate completion of supervisor evaluation
Students should direct recommenders to complete the online recommendation form by the application deadline to be considered.
At least 1 letter of recommendation is required but you main include more.
Letters may be from faculty, staff, anyone who can speak to your previous work and ability to success in your internship.
Financial Statement
The committee will receive basic information regarding your financial aid status that will place you in one of the categories listed below. The need figures which underlie the categories are determined in the same way that the Financial Aid Office determines a student’s eligibility for financial aid. Categories are established to give the committee a relative understanding of student need across a wide spectrum.
Categories
Very High - need over $60,000
High - need $50,000 - $60,000
Med - need $30,000 - $50,000
Low - need $1 - $30,000
No Need - student has sufficient resources to attend LC with no other assistance
The online application form will provide you with space to include any additional information (to that noted above) that you would like the committee to take into consideration regarding your financial situation as it relates to the pursuit of this internship.
This section is optional but strongly encouraged.
Essay
The online application form will require you to upload a PDF your essay.
The essay should be approximately 3 pages (double spaced) and address the following prompts:
What motivated or inspired you to pursue this internship?
What specific skills do you hope to gain or refine?
How will the successful completion of this internship relate to your future career and/or academic plans?
How does receiving this funding impact your ability to complete this internship?
How do you plan to apply what you will learn from this experience?
