Art Show
45th Annual Gender Studies Symposium
RESIST NOW!
March 11–13, 2026
The Gender Studies Symposium Art Exhibit will be on display in the Watzek Library atrium from March 11–29.
Curated by L&C students Jamison Bane ’27, Finn Dwyer ’28, and Maria Martinez Decuir ’27.
Curatorial Statement:
This year’s art exhibition is an invitation to contemplate expressions of resistance across many dimensions of gender. What are the possible functions of art in resistance movements? How can artistic practices be nurtured in an environment of social violence? Why do we find ourselves especially drawn to art and creative expression throughout periods of struggle? This year’s art exhibition allows for exploration of these questions by embracing the contradictions, representations, and opportunities for emotional resonance found within the works. These works navigate landscapes of censorship and shame, while confronting feelings toward the body, the unfamiliar, and the present moment. The vitality of such representation is intensified in times when we find ourselves looking to art so that we may be re-oriented in the present and toward the future. As social theorist Avery Gordon writes, “We need to know where we live in order to imagine living elsewhere. We need to imagine living elsewhere before we can live there.”
