Alumni and Faculty Support Student Scholarships

Dozens of alumni, faculty and friends support the mathematical sciences programs each year with their gifts designated to the department. Donors play an integral role in the success of the mathematical sciences faculty and students. Listed here is a sampling of recent, significant gifts to support mathematical sciences at Lewis & Clark.

The Mathematical Sciences Student Assistance and Enrichment Fund was established in 2008 by David and Julie Dougherty to support worthy students in mathematical sciences. David received a BA in Mathematics in 1980 from Lewis & Clark. David assisted in the math skills center and has also been a volunteer for the L&C Alumni Network. The fund provides student support for educational conferences and workshops, examination fees assistance, and the Alumni Award for Scholarship and Service.

The Isaac Clark Memorial Fund for Physics and Mathematical Sciences was established in 2011 by Linda D. Clark Olson, Robert N. Olson, family and friends in memory of Isaac J. Clark ’12. Linda and Bob wish to honor their son’s life by providing support to worthy students in physics and mathematical sciences who demonstrate strong academic and leadership skills. The fund provides grants for various educational opportunities that enhance the student learning experience at Lewis & Clark.

The Christine Fredricks Smith Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 2011 by Professor Emeritus Gregory A. Fredricks, who taught mathematics at the College for 24 years.  In establishing this Scholarship, Greg honors the memory of his daughter, Christine, who graduated from the College in 1992 and was killed in an airplane crash in 2007.  This scholarship is awarded annually to an outstanding junior or senior mathematics major who has demonstrated significant contributions to the life of the department.

The Mathematics Alumni Scholarship Fund was established through gifts from alumni donors and from Professor Emeritus Roger B. Nelsen who taught mathematics at the College for 40 years. At Lewis & Clark, he enjoyed and is grateful for the community of collaborative scholars and the opportunity to forge lasting relationships with students in mathematics and on overseas studies programs. The premier award funded by mathematics alumni, this scholarship supports an outstanding mathematics major, regardless of class standing, who has shown exceptional promise in the field of mathematics.  In establishing this fund, Roger offers a dollar for dollar match up to $100,000 from donors—for a total endowment goal of $200,000.
