The Harm Reduction Community Outreach Club

Our mission is to promote health among the students of Lewis & Clark College and the greater
Portland area while recognizing the importance of autonomy and community. We recognize a
need in our community for education surrounding safer drug practices, harm reduction resources, and an end to the stigma that surrounds substance use. We confront these issues by leading educational workshops related to harm reduction and current events related to substance use, by encouraging the use of naloxone and fentanyl test strips, by holding space for individuals who use drugs and those who want to talk about drug use, and by participating in community outreach with local organizations.

What is harm reduction?

Harm reduction is any practice that reduces the harm associated with risky behaviors. A few examples are safe sex supplies, naloxone, fentanyl test strips, and education! Even wearing a helmet or going to the dentist is considered harm reduction!

What is naloxone?

Naloxone is an opioid antagonist that temporarily reverses the effects of an opioid overdose.

Where can I get naloxone?

  • Reach out to our club (contact information below) for free naloxone.
  • Next Distro will send you free naloxone after you complete their training
  • Go to any pharmacy and ask for naloxone (it is available over the counter!). This will typically cost about $50 for two doses.

Will I get in trouble for calling for help if someone is overdosing?

Our campus has a medical amnesty policy that protects students who call for help. Oregon also has Good Samaritan laws that protect anyone who assists in a medical emergency.

Where can I get free fentanyl test strips on campus?

  • Reach out to us
  • Watzek bathrooms
  • FSU has fentanyl test strips outside their office
  • The Office of Health Promotion and Wellness has test strips outside their office as well.
