What three words would you use to describe L&C?
What’s your favorite class? Why?
My Words class (Reality & Identity) by Benjamin Westervelt. Unfortunately, however, he retired at the end of my first year. But his class introduced me to some amazing literature and ideas that got me excited about being involved in academia and my college learning experience. It was an open-discussion-based class where you felt comfortable and safe to have your ideas heard. Many of my other professors have also had this atmosphere, but I am glad that I had to take this Words class because it introduced me to the college level of reading and writing.
What made you want to come to Lewis & Clark?
The head lacrosse coach, Lindsay Newman, and the opportunity to help build a brand new lacrosse program.
What do you like or find most interesting about your major?
Being a philosophy major, I have the opportunity to research and learn about important ideas that shape our society, and be able to put my ideas and arguments into them. It gives me a personal connection to my work that makes school fun.
What do you like or find most interesting about your minor?
The fact that it offers so many opportunities for learning in the summer and outside of school assignments. There are amazing things you can do, like Lunch with a Leader, internships, and Winterim, that open many doors for the future.
Tell us about your support systems and social outlets on campus: people, activities, clubs, res halls, etc.
The community is very supportive and understanding; there’s not a single person or professor on this campus that I wouldn’t feel comfortable expressing my concerns to. So many of the clubs on campus also offer places of inclusivity and make you feel welcome no matter what.
If you have studied or will study overseas while at Lewis & Clark, how did you choose your program? What did your overseas study add to your L&C experience?
I chose my program because of the sustainability aspect and location. Visiting Thailand has always been at the top of my bucket list. The fact that I can study and learn while exploring the country and culture is an amazing experience for which I am so grateful.
What advice do you have for incoming students?
Don’t be afraid to get involved with clubs and activities outside of your main interests. It allows you to meet so many different people and discover new avocations.
How did your financial aid package influence your decision to attend Lewis & Clark?
Lewis & Clark was able to get me the aid I needed to match my budget for attending college.
Why do you love playing lacrosse at L&C? How do you balance athletics and academics?
I love my lacrosse team and our connection with each other. I feel loved and supported by every single teammate, and I think it undoubtedly contributes to our success and teamwork on the field. The coaches are quite adamant about academics coming first and athletics second. They give us many opportunities to succeed in school, along with support from professors who are willing to work with athletes and their schedules during the season.
