About the event:

Join us for a special lunch as we honor the trailblazing history of our Overseas and Off-Campus Programs. As one of the first private liberal arts institutions to make global immersion a cornerstone of the undergraduate experience, we are gathering the leaders and alumni who built—and lived—this incredible legacy.

This gathering is an opportunity to journey back to the places we studied, rekindle the connections we made there, and share and reflect on the learning that stays with us to this day. To help you reconnect with those who shared your “home away from home,” seating will be organized by geographic region. Whether you studied in Iran in the ’70s or Tokyo last year, you’ll find yourself among kindred spirits.

What to Expect:

  • A World of Flavor: Enjoy a variety of international cuisines.

  • Voices Across Generations: Hear inspiring stories from former program leaders, alumni, and current students. Speakers to include:

        • Professor Emeritus of Education Zaher Wahab (Former Faculty Leader)- Over his 40 years teaching L&C courses ranging from educational anthropology to international political economy, Professor Wahab led over 10 Overseas and off—Campus programs to locations including Nicaragua, Sweden, Costa Rica, Portugal, Korea, and India. Following retirement from L&C in 2012, he served as Director of Graduate Studies at the Center for Teaching and Learning at the American University of Afghanistan until 2020.

        • Aukeem Ballard ’11 (India 2009) - 2026 Outstanding Young Alumni Awardee. A former L&C Board of Alumni member and Equity and Inclusion chair, Aukeem has spent his career championing systemic change. From his time as a teacher in Portland Public Schools to Co-Principal and social justice advocate in California, to his current PhD research at UC Berkeley, he remains dedicated to reimagining K-12 schools as humanizing spaces where marginalized youth can thrive.

        • Paul Barker ’71 (Persia 1968) - Past Distinguished Alumna Award Winner and former Country Director for organizations like Save the Children and CARE International (Afghanistan). He has also worked in Egypt, the West Bank/Gaza, and Ethiopia, and was a Peace Corps volunteer in Iran.

        • Professor of Anthropology Oren Kosansky (Faculty Leader: Australia Spring 2016; Morocco Spring 2011, Spring 2019, and Fall 2025), who recently worked on an Intercultural Dialogues project (based on L&C’s Community Dialogues meant to facilitate discussion across a full range of opinions and beliefs) with his Morocco study abroad students and local students.

  • Global Trivia: Test your knowledge of world cultures and program history for a chance to win bragging rights - and maybe more!

  • Celebrating Our Faculty: We’ll be highlighting our unique commitment to faculty-led, semester-long programming—a tradition that continues to set our institution apart.

Come share a table with fellow travelers, celebrate our shared history, and see how the seeds of global citizenship continue to grow today.
