But what and even where “Spain”
ishas changed over time, in some quite remarkable ways. In Roman times Spain was a comfortably peripheral part of a mutli-ethnic empire; in the middle ages, it was the Ukraine between Christian Europe to the north and Muslim Africa to the south. “Africa,” said Victor Hugo, “begins at the Pyrenees.” In the sixteenth century it was the center of a global empire: the king of the Spains had the Pillars of Hercules on his crest, signifying that his dominion extended even beyond the Straits of Gibraltar into the Ocean Sea and beyond. Through it all though, what becomes the “Camino de Santiago” runs like a scarlet thread linking time and place.
