Faculty Permissions

Self Service divides discrete tasks to better allow faculty to make choices that are not “all or nothing”. (For example: you can waive junior standing without compromising prerequisites that have to be met .)

The Faculty Permissions Tab in Self-Service allows you to take the following actions for your specific course section:

  1. grant “add authorization” to allow an individual student to register during the add/drop period for a specific course section
  2. provide Instructor Consent and/or override restrictions (things like required junior standing or required major) for an individual student for a specific course section
  3. waive prerequisites for an individual student for a specific course section

These are three different and discrete tasks.  For any given student, you can use one or multiple tools to grant the exception(s) you wish to make.

ADD AUTHORIZATION

During the add/drop period, students must obtain authorization from the instructor to be able to add a specific course section.

You have the ability to grant this add-authorization by using this option.  (The instructor consent button, which was used previously, will now only waive required instructor consent or restrictions for courses.  It will not grant the ability to add a course during the add/drop period.)   Note that you must grant add authorization, and a seat must be available.

REQUISITE WAIVER

Requisites are courses that must be taken prior to registering for a given course, or concurrently with the course.

You have the ability to override a required prerequisite, or to override a course that must be taken previously or concurrently.  Using this option waives ALL prerequisites for the course – you can’t choose just one.

You do not have the ability to waive courses that are always required to be taken concurrently (such as a required concurrent lab course).

INSTRUCTOR CONSENT

Instructor consent is required for some courses - thesis or honors courses, Inside/Out courses or others.

Restrictions are requirements such as Junior Standing or requirements that the student have a specific major, etc. (A course may have multiple restrictions, or may require both instructor consent AND that the student meet listed restrictions.)

Using this option waives ALL required instructor consent and/or restrictions. You do not have the ability to choose individual restrictions, or to waive consent but not restrictions.

In the unusual event that you need to override both prerequisites and restrictions/consent, you will need to complete both processes for a given student.
