Lewis & Clark Scholarships

Sue Ellen Markey and James W. Boyd Grant for Overseas Study

This grant offers financial assistance (in the form of a credit to the student’s account) to students who may need help off-setting any additional costs associated with participating in their overseas program (please be specific about those costs in your application). Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until all of the funds have been allocated for the year. Please contact Blythe Knott (blythe@lclark.edu) with any questions.

Deadline: Applications for Fall 2025 programs will be evaluated in early May of 2025. 

Dinah Dodds Endowment

The Dinah Dodds Endowment for International Education provides grants to students to allow them to conduct research on a Lewis & Clark overseas program and extend their study abroad experience. The fund also provides faculty grants to enhance specific programs—for example, by covering unbudgeted equipment or technology, seminars, and other educational resources. Please email Blythe Knott (blythe@lclark.edu) with any questions.

Deadline: Friday, March 28 2025 by 4 pm PST for students on Spring 2025 programs. 

SAAB Grants

The SAAB grant program funds student research initiatives and other academic expenses via a board of student representatives from each academic discipline. Visit their page for detailed information about the different grants available, and to find application instructions and deadlines. National Scholarships

Boren Scholarships

Boren Scholarships provide up to $25,000 to U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded. For a complete list of countries, visit the Eligible Programs page.

Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is a fully-funded overseas language and cultural immersion summer program for American undergraduate and graduate students. With the goal of broadening the base of Americans studying and mastering critical languages and building relationships between the people of the United States and other countries, CLS provides study opportunities to a diverse range of students from across the United States at every level of language learning.

CET Scholarships

CET is the host organization for our programs in China, Japan, Jordan and Taiwan. CIEE offers merit, identity and need-based scholarships and grants. CYA Scholarships

College Year in Athens (CYA) is the host organization for our Greece: Athens & Lesbos program. CYA offers several scholarships for students who participate in their programs, and Lewis & Clark students who have been accepted to the Greece program are eligible to apply. FIE Scholarships

FIE is the host organization for our London: Fine Arts program. They offer a few scholarships each semester - visit their website to learn more about the opportunities available to FIE students.

IES Abroad Scholarship Database

IES Abroad offers scholarship and financial aid opportunities to students on all of their programs—including our France: Paris and Germany: Berlin and South Korea: Seoul programs. Additionally, the IES website provides information on outside scholarships and funding opportunities.

IFSA Scholarships

The Institute for Study Abroad (IFSA) is the host organization for our Chile: Santiago; Chile: Valparaiso; Mexico: Merida; Mexico: Health Studies and Spain: Seville programs. IFSA offers scholarships for semester programs, year programs, and summer programs. These scholarships are based on financial need, and a scholarship application is required. Any student studying abroad on an IFSA program may apply for a scholarship.

 

Location-Based Scholarships

Freeman-ASIA

Freeman Awards for Study in Asia (Freeman-ASIA) provides scholarships for U.S. undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia. A Freeman-ASIA Award provides need-based funding to assist the recipient with the cost of the study abroad program and related expenses, including airfare, basic living costs, local transportation, books, etc.

Deadline: January 2025 for programs offered during the 2025-2026 academic year. 

Study Abroad in Japan: Bridging Scholarships

The Bridging Project offers scholarships to American undergraduate students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. Funding from private foundations and major U.S. corporations, through donations to the nonprofit US-Japan Bridging Foundation, makes it possible to award about 100 scholarships each year to assist students with the travel and living expenses they will incur while studying abroad in Japan for a semester or an academic year. 

 

Gilman-DAAD Germany Scholarship

The Gilman-DAAD Germany Scholarship is a partnership between the U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin Gilman Scholarship Program and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). This scholarship supports a wider effort between the United States and Germany to increase and diversify international student mobility among German and American higher education institutions. DAAD Germany will provide 40 additional scholarships for U.S. undergraduate students per year to study and/or intern for academic credit in Germany through the Gilman Program.
