Grants

The Student Academic Affairs Board (SAAB) sponsors a competitive grant program supporting:

  1. student-motivated research
  2. attendance at conferences
  3. visiting scholar programs
  4. performances or artistic displays

Your Department’s Representatives are also happy to brainstorm safe or virtual projects you can apply for.

SAAB meets throughout the Fall & Spring semester to discuss and vote on grants. Grant applicants are then invited to present their application to the Grant Board within two weeks of the date of submission. The Grant Board makes funding decisions based on merit and the project’s contribution to the Lewis & Clark community.

NOTE: The final deadline to apply for grants this Spring will be on Wednesday, April 8th. Keep in mind we hear only up to three grants per meeting, so you may need to apply sooner to ensure a presentation time. Grants are heard on a first-come first-serve basis.

Would you like to apply? Email Grants Director at saabgrants@lclark.edu about clarifying each step of the application process, or answering any questions. Applicants are required to meet with their student department representatives before submitting application.

Research Grant:

The Student Academic Affairs Board (SAAB) Research Grant supports students who are conducting self-motivated research (supported by a faculty advisor) that adds depth and perspective to existing courses, programs, and issues at Lewis & Clark. Such research may be for independent study courses or theses/projects.

SAAB works with the Sponsored Projects and Research Compliance (SPARC) Office to ensure that funded research meets federal guidelines and College policies. For example, the College requires that all staff, faculty, and students involved in research are trained in the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) and complete online training modules. In addition, if your research involves human subjects, live vertebrate animals, and/or biological materials, it must be approved by an institutional research compliance committee prior to research initiation. Please note that research involving human subjects includes interviews, exemption must be determined by the IRB, and IRB review can take several months. More information and instructions are available on the SAAB grant application or by reaching out to the committees directly.

DUE DATES:

  • Grant applications are heard on a rolling basis. Submit your grant application to saabgrants@lclark.edu in order for it to be reviewed by the SAAB representatives.

IMPORTANT TIPS FOR THE PROCESS PLEASE READ!

All applications should be submitted digitally to the SAAB Director of Grants at saabgrants@lclark.edu. Upon submitting all required application documents, applicants will be notified by email with further details.

Start now! You need two SAAB members to advise and ultimate be signatories for your grant. SAAB Grant Board members are not required to meet with applicants if they are not contacted at least two weeks before the grant is turned in. Please reach out to the Grants director at saabgrants@lclark.edu when you are ready to be linked to your two signers.
Revise, revise, revise. Your application should be excellent and free of any errors. Typos are an indication of a lack of concern and will diminish your chances of being funded. Note:
  • Applications must have ALL required elements in order to be heard by the Board. Make sure to contact Student Department Representatives in advance in order to procure two signatures for your grant. Contacting the SAAB Grant Director as well will improve the depth of your grant and the process!
  • If you are funded, It takes the business office up to two-weeks to process the money you have been awarded. Please plan accordingly.
  • SAAB Grants do not allocate funds retroactively. This means you cannot apply for an event, project, or research that has already occurred. It is important you plan ahead.
  • SAAB Grants cannot fund food. In your itemized budget food should never be included and if it is, the price listed will automatically be disregarded.

Presentations

Presentations are required for all submitted grants and must occur before the event or project being proposed takes place. After submitting your completed grant application, the grants director will coordinate a time to hold a grant hearing with the representative board. Each presentation will be 7-10 minutes long with an additional 10 minutes for questions from the board. The presentation should provide an overview of your project, budget, LC community giveback, and broader significance of your project. The board will hear a maximum of three grants per week, so submitting your application early is important to ensure the board has an opportunity to hear your grant

For more information email the SAAB Director of Grants at saabgrants@lclark.edu. We want you to get funded and we can help you navigate the process.
