Lewis & Clark College dedicates a week of service, learning, and action to commemorate the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and other civil rights activists. 

Our annual MLK Week will take place from January 19 to January 24, 2026.

10 Ways to Celebrate Dr. Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

10 ways of honoring MLK

  1. Watch movies that center the Black experience: Blood Diamond, The Ernest Green Story, Selma, When They See Us (show), The Hate You Give.
  2. Listen to podcasts on race in society and history: Seeing White and Code Switch.
  3. Visit TravelPortland’s online article on Black Portland and shop at a PDX Black-owned business.
  4. Check out art by Kehinde Wiley, Kara Walker, and other Black artists.
  5. Research and donate to a racial justice organization: Urban League of Portland, Don’t Shoot PDX, Black United Fund of Oregon.
  6. Listen to music that uplifts Black music and culture: Tupac Shakur, Nipsey Hussle, Billie Holiday.
  7. Read books on the Black experience and racial justice: Begin Again, How to be an Antiracist, The Portland Black Panthers.
  8. Volunteer at a local organization that supports communities of color: Urban League of Portland, PCUN, IRCO.
  9. Complete the Wheel of Power and Privilege to reflect on your own race and identity.
  10. Log onto OregonBlackPioneers.org and explore the stories of Oregon’s Black history.
