ADPI Heritage Month

Asian Pacific American Heritage Month celebrates and recognizes the histories, cultures, and contributions of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities.

At Lewis & Clark College, we celebrate Asian Diaspora Pacific Islander Heritage Month in April, rather than the nationally recognized month of May, in order to align with the academic calendar. Each year, a planning committee made up of students, staff, and faculty comes together to thoughtfully design programming that honors these communities. In 2023, the committee intentionally renamed the observance to Asian Diaspora Pacific Islander Heritage Month to better reflect and include the vast diversity within the Asian Diaspora and Pacific Islander communities represented on our campus.

The month of May was officially declared Asian/Pacific American (or Asian Pacific Islander) Heritage Month by Congress in 1990. May was selected to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States in 1843 and the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869, led by Chinese immigrants.

Please join us this month in celebrating Asian Diaspora Pacific Islander Heritage Month.  See below to learn about upcoming and past events. If you’d like to get involved, please email multicultural@lclark.edu.
