What three words would you use to describe L&C?
What’s your favorite class? How has it expanded your knowledge?
My favorite class I have taken so far has been Key Monuments with Associate Professor Benjamin David. Ben brought new and remarkable perspectives to Western art history that I had yet to experience. His kindness and caring for students is clear, and he emulates a well-rounded approach to knowledge in his lectures and assignments. 10/10, would recommend!
Social Psychology with Associate Professor Diana Leonard was also a really transformational course for me. I knew I was invested in being a psych major when I enrolled in the class, but learning with Diana solidified my passions within psychology and outlined much of the direction I wanted to pursue. Diana is an incredibly kind and a wonderful teacher!
Who is your mentor on campus? Why do you consider this person your mentor?
My mentor on campus is Associate Professor Therese Augst. Not only is she a wonderful and gifted educator, but she is also supportive and kind in all matters of life. She gives great advice, and is always available as a resource to her students. Therese has advocated for me as a student and has more than once been willing to speak on my behalf. Most importantly, I see her as a life-long friend.
What made you want to come to Lewis & Clark?
The intimate class sizes, being near the city, and the study abroad opportunities!
How do you describe the liberal arts?
All-inclusive, interactive, and discussion-based learning.
Where do you find community on campus?
I found my community through my Living-Learning Community in Manzanita Hall and through my New Student Trip. I have also made strong connections through my classes and extracurriculars.
If you went on a New Student Trip with College Outdoors, how did it shape your experience as an incoming student?
It was a great starting point for making friends, exploring my interests, and learning about L&C before we arrived on campus. It also released the stress of entering a completely new environment.
If you have studied or will study overseas while at Lewis & Clark, how did you choose your program? What did your overseas study add to your L&C experience so far?
I will participate in the yearlong Munich, Germany, overseas program starting August 2021. Studying abroad is a requirement for my German studies major, but the Munich program is actually one of the reasons I chose to come to L&C!
Did you know what you wanted to major in when you came to L&C? Did that change once you got here? When did you declare your major?
I applied to LC because of the Munich program. I’ve known for some time that I wanted to double major in German and another subject, and L&C allowed me to have the most immersive experience abroad while providing an excellent on-campus department.
Why did you want to go to a liberal arts college? Did you consider other types of schools?
I considered many types of school when I was applying. I ultimately chose liberal arts because it supported and encouraged my desire to pursue three incredibly different academic disciplines.
What do you hope to do with your degree?
I have just applied to be a Fulbright scholar. If accepted, I will spend a year abroad teaching English. After Fulbright, I hope to pursue grad school to become a speech language pathologist. With this qualification I hope to be a speech therapist for children and adolescents with speech impediments.
