International Affairs Symposium

The Lewis & Clark College International Affairs Symposium is one of the most prestigious events within the Oregon academic and civic communities. It has been highly acclaimed by The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times , and The Chronicle of Higher Education . It is also the oldest student-run symposium in the United States.

Historically, the symposium has used debates to emphasize the confrontation of opposing viewpoints with the aim of helping the audience develop a more thorough understanding of the complexities surrounding international dilemmas. This year, the International Affairs Symposium confronts one of the most pressing challenges of our time: the global rise of authoritarianism and democratic backsliding. Through a diverse array of events—including a keynote discussion, a spirited debate, a thought-provoking documentary screening with the film producer, interactive “Write for Rights” sessions where participants take direct action on wide-ranging issues, a live podcast recording, and powerful storytelling experiences from those who fled authoritarian forces in their home countries—we explore the forces driving democratic erosion worldwide. From the weakening of international institutions to anti-immigrant rhetoric, political polarization, and the concentration of power, each event is designed to help audiences develop a nuanced understanding of these complex global challenges.

All of the debates are held in the Fowler Council Chambers on the Lewis & Clark College Campus. Parking is available in the East Lot on the Graduate School Campus. Signs will direct you to parking and to the event. A van is provided to transport guests who do not wish to walk to and from the parking lot and event space.
